One of the rarest paintings by Vincent van Gogh was sold at a Sotheby’s New York auction for a staggering $61.8 million dollars. This is the highest auction price for a van Gogh painting in over 15 years.
The 1890 painting, “Still Life, Vase With Daisies and Poppies”, which originally was expected to fetch between $30 million and $50 million, saw much more interest than anticipated.
A Chinese movie tycoon dished out the almost $62 million dollars over phone during the auction. Wang, who is a the chairman of Huayi Brother Media, a film and talent production company, has been buying up a significant amount of art in the Western market.
The largest sum ever fetched for a van Gogh painting is $82.5 million dollars.
